In
the years following the Gold Rush, the Big Four robber barrons
- Collis P. Huntington, Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford, and
Mark Hopkins - built their homes in the Nob Hill area surrounding
the present day Grace Cathedral. The location where Grace Cathedral
now stands was also the location of the extravagant residence
of Charles Crocker. Crocker later donated the land surrounding
the Crocker Mansion to the Episcopal Church. In 1993, excavations
in the parking lot behind the cathedral produced the architectural
remnants of Crocker's carriage house, a number of related artifacts,
as well as the grave of his dog. When Grace Cathedral's archivist
Michael D. Lampen learned Archeo-Tec had indeed uncovered the
grave of Crocker's pooch, he insisted we had found a Crocker
Spaniel. |
