Located
adjacent to Pier 39 near the modern intersection of Northpoint
and Kearney streets, the N-5 dumpsite was an extensive late
19th Century trash deposit . During the 1880's, the area was
the scene of much of the city's shipping and commerce, and was
thus subject to casual dumping. In the late 1970's, Archeo-Tec
recovered a sizeable assemblage of Euro-American and Chinese
artifacts. )
The
N-5 Dumpsite also provided a detailed portrait of filling
practices during the late 19th Century and their relationship
to the wider aspects of life in San Francisco during that
period. (1976-1981)
