Fisherman's Wharf—San Francisco

The area surrounding the present-day Fisherman's Wharf Hotel remained submerged beneath the San Francisco Bay until the late 19th Century, when extensive filling and dumping began, rendering the area suitable for building.

The filling continued until 1910, and the high number of intact glass, metal, ceramic, and leather artifacts recovered include dumped trash from the earthquake and fires of 1906, along with evidence of industrial waste from early commercial enterprises in the northern waterfront region.
